Delicate Branching forms

Selected for the Helpman Graduate Exhibition 2023
“Delicate” 2022 6m x 1.5 m consisting of 4 x 1.5 x 1.5m canvas panels, uv cured archival digital print on poly cotton.
The artefact is long and narrow. It is disposed as 4, 1.5m x 1.5m canvasses hung edge to edge. Its colours are muted. Primarily silver grey, fine traceries of black and an area of golden ochre that is roughly central but is not a focal point. There is a sense of rolling movement from left to right, the impression of a cloud front or breaking wave. As you approach the work, the impression of a wave vanishes you can see that it is made of a multitude of branching elements that fill the image completely. Some are as thick as your arm, other thin as thread. Each individual element is textured, its details revealed by an indirect light. You cannot see through the branches as they are too numerous and there is a sense that there is no end to them. Densely layered like an embroidery they cross and recross. It is difficult to look away. There is the impression that if you look a little longer, a little deeper, something will be revealed. There is also an awareness that as intriguing as these branching shapes are, that they are now dead. Dry and brittle and despite its scale, delicate.
